  • Riding Levels

2011 was the first year BCEC used Riding Levels students.  This new system allows us to help students gauge their progress, set realistic goals, match riders and horses, as well as help students find other riders at their level to ride with.  Please read the description of each level provided below:

    • Beginner (B) - Learning horse safety, care and tacking.  Able to trot independently with control.  Beginning work on simple figures and transitions.
    • Advanced Beginner (AB) – Can perform all of the above and is also able to catch, groom and tack up a horse by themselves.  Can ride independently with control at the walk, trot and is learning to canter.  Can navigate more complex patterns. All disciplines are beginning to work over ground poles.
    • Intermediate (I) – Can perform all of the above and is also able to walk/trot/canter with confidence.  Is able to navigate patterns including upward and downward transitions.  Beginning to focus on their chosen discipline more precisely.  Riders desiring to jump will begin working over cross-rails and doing courses.
    • Advanced Intermediate (AI) – Can perform all of the above and is also able to ride outside the ring with confidence.  Riders desiring to jump will be doing courses up to 2’3”.  Other disciplines will be able to manage complex patterns.
    • Advanced (A) - Can perform all of the above and is also able to w/t/c and gallop.  Riders desiring to jump will be able to do a course of 2’9” to include lead changes.  Students in all disciplines will have mastered lead changes and be able to ride complex patterns including lateral work.
